Inclusive Forum Nepal(IFN) is one of the organizations working for the sexual and gender minorities and their counterparts in Nepal since its inception in 2013 March, Led by a transgender Male, Badri Pun also known as Dilu Buduja. The main agenda of the organization is to promote and to strengthen the rights of the sexual and gender minorities in respects to advocating the legal issues. Also, to supports the economic upliftment of the community. IFN is a part of the larger sexual and gender minorities movement, supporting and lobbying the government agencies for the safer for the safer identity and safe living of the sexual and gender minorities community.

IFN has been working in this sector for the past 7 years and has a prime actor in bring laws regarding the sexual and gender minorities in Nepal. IFN had a track record of strong research, Coordination, collaboration, networking skills and extensive experience in sexual and gender minorities sectors' policy and practice analysis and working with state and non-state actors on policy advocacy and governance.

The major working areas of the institution has been;

Advocating, promoting and strengthening the rights of the sexual and gender minorities

Providing skills which supports the economic upliftment of the community

Lobbying the government agencies for the safer identity and safe living of the sexual and gender minorities.

According to me, when we talk about LGBTIQ++ community in context to Nepal, there are many important issues that needs more discussion as the issues ranges from the daily lives, right to nationality and most importantly the right to self identification. For me, the right to self identification is important to be addressed as when it is not respected by the state , it has an impact on the statistics , which has streamlined both public and private sphere, law and policy, workplace and households disrespecting and neglecting LGBTIQ++. There should be zero tolerance towards infringement of their human rights and efforts should be made to keep their rights intact.

We need more discussions on the ways how we can remove gendering and its hierarchy that exist in our society. For this, it is important to normalize if people don’t want to state their gender. The reasons are simple: gender is only a social construct; gender is fluid; and how one feels about one's own gender is not another's business.Each individual should have the freedom (respecting others' freedom) to choose what one wears, how one looks, and who one likes or loves. We need to question each of us why individuals need to be confined in a gender box, and why do we expect them to adopt the roles our society has bestowed upon them. Normalizing gender neutral mindset will help a lot to lessen the prejudice towards any individuals/communities who do not conform to traditional gender norms. This way, I believe we will succeed in erasing the distinctions between "us" and "them", thus the discrimination.

Every day learning can happen if we keep an open mind. We need to challenge our inbuilt unconscious biases towards people with different sexual orientation, gender identity and sexual expression. It is important to take the burden of educating yourself and not shift the burden on someone who is already struggling/battling with the complex and interlocked systems of oppression. No matter who we identify as, we can stand as oppressed or oppressor in split seconds. So, how do we become more vigilant about our own ‘power and privileges’ should be a constant in our movement(s). Let us fight our own demons but first at least acknowledge that you have demons. Let us be more aware and practice empathy, love and compassion with tinge of passion and fearlessness to overthrow cis-heteronormative-abiest-casteist narratives.

Reclaiming Narratives

The topic LGBTIQ++ is still susceptible. Talking about myself, I came to know about the LGBTIQ++ community when I was doing my bachelor. We need to discuss more in Nepal’s context, including comprehensive sexuality education in our school curriculum. I think School is one of the important institutions where we can educate the future generation. Only then, they can look beyond the gender box that our society has labeled and respect diverse people living around our community. Media representation is a powerful tool in today’s world, the lack of representation and narratives of LGBTIQ++ communities in mainstream media and the way it depicts the community is disrespectful. Hence people tend to believe and internalize it and fail to see gender beyond the binary box. Lack of representation and lack of narratives is a hurdle for people who cannot accept the LGBTIQ++ community, and lack of platform is a hurdle for people from the LGBTIQ++ community.

As a health professional, I never read about LGBTIQ in my university courses. I read, only two sex exists, male and female are normal and beyond that everything that exists is abnormal. I got opportunity to work with LGBTIQ community very closely during my research and advocacy journey on SRHR. I then realized how much stigma I hold towards LGBTIQ community. It took some time to unlearn the things I had learn about LGBTIQ community from society I had grown up with. As a youth SRHR advocate, I felt I can play a role in normalizing their gender identity, sexuality and gender expression (as it is normal indeed). Now, every time I conduct training on SRHR I bring some discussion around LGBTIQ and their rights, whenever possible, I ensure they represent their own voice from their own perspective in training sessions.
